Common causes
A heat pump can produce different sounds during operation. Buzzing, vibrating, rattling, clicking or metallic noises may be related to loose parts, dirt buildup, fans, electrical components or vibration from the unit. Some sounds during startup, shutdown or the defrost cycle can be normal, but a new, loud or persistent noise may indicate a problem that requires inspection.
What to check
Observe whether the noise comes from the indoor or outdoor unit and whether it occurs during startup, normal operation, shutdown or the defrost cycle. Visually check for objects, leaves or debris around the outdoor unit and confirm that airflow openings are not blocked. Do not remove panels or place objects near or inside the fans.
When to request service
Consider requesting a professional inspection if the noise is loud, begins suddenly, gets worse over time or is accompanied by excessive vibration, poor heating or cooling, excessive ice, a burning smell or electrical problems. If you hear a loud metallic noise or the fan appears to be striking something, turn the system off and request an inspection.
How much can this repair cost?
Basic air conditioning repairs or initial work typically range from $650–$1,200 MXN. Repairs requiring parts or more extensive work can range from $1,200–$5,500+ MXN.
The final cost depends on the cause of the problem, diagnosis, labor, required parts and materials. Replacement parts are quoted separately when applicable.
